Today's Signal

The three developments this week that actually matter for a small business owner, categorised, sourced and translated into plain English.

Curated 20 Jul 2026

AI/ML Breakthrough09 Jul 2026

OpenAI opens GPT-5.6 to everyone, in three price tiers

OpenAI's flagship family went fully public on 9 July, split into three tiers, Sol, Terra and Luna, priced from $1 to $5 per million input tokens. Sol is built for genuinely hard technical work; Luna is the cheap, fast option most small businesses will actually reach for day to day.

Why it matters

If you've been paying premium prices for AI output that doesn't need premium reasoning, the cheap tier is probably good enough now. Check before you renew anything.

Strategic Move15 Jul 2026

Anthropic and Blackstone launch a $1.5bn business that isn't about the model at all

Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs have put $1.5 billion behind a company whose entire job is helping businesses actually use AI, not build it. OpenAI has quietly started something similar. Both labs are betting the real money isn't in the model anymore, it's in getting ordinary companies to adopt it properly.

Why it matters

This is the labs admitting what small business owners already knew: the model was never the hard part, the implementation was.

Emerging Trend19 Jul 2026

Small businesses adopted AI faster than they wrote rules for it

New data out this week shows most small businesses are now using AI daily, but very few ever wrote down an actual policy on what it can touch, client data, contracts, financials. Adoption raced ahead of any real governance.

Why it matters

A one-page policy on what AI can and can't see takes twenty minutes to write and closes the biggest risk most owners haven't thought about yet.
